Beyazıt Kulesi

Bir zamanlar İstanbul halkına yangın ve hava durumu haberlerini veren Beyazıt Kulesi Kasım 2013’te müzeye dönüştürüldü. 1828’de II. Mahmut tarafından Mimar Senekerim Balyan’a yaptırılan kulenin geleneklerine göre, yangını gören nöbetteki gözcü itfaiye şefine “Ağa! Bir çocuğun oldu” derdi. Ağa da sorardı: “Kız mı, oğlan mı?” Anadolu yakası, Beyoğlu ve Boğaz’ın Rumeli tarafındaki yangınlar “kız”, İstanbul içi yangınlar da “oğlan” olarak anılırdı.

Beyazit Tower was recently converted into a museum. Sultan Mahmut the 2nd comissioned the building to the architect Balyan Senekerim in 1828. Once upon a time the people of Istanbul learned news of city fires and weather from the tower. According to custom, the lookout would shout "Captain, we have a child." The captain would ask: "Is it a girl or a boy?" If the fire was inside the old city the lookout would respond, “a boy!”, and for the rest of the town "a girl."
